The Karl Clews Trio
Karl Clews is a bassist and composer based in Galway in Ireland, who after years as a session player and sideman to visiting artists, including Dr John, David McAlmont and Fred Wesley, has recently become known for his solo bass and bass-led arrangements and original compositions on his YouTube channel. Inspired by masters of the modern bass such as Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten, his mission is to raise awareness of the as yet largely untapped potential of the electric bass guitar as a lead and solo instrument. With four albums of original jazz-fusion material under his belt, Karl recruited saxophonist Bertrand Huvé and drummer Richie Dittrich to form The Karl Clews Trio to present a blistering live set of funky originals and deft bass-led arrangements of classic jazz fusion numbers. Expect everything from uptempo cop-show funk workouts such as Stanley Clarke's Pop Virgil and Karl's original, Switchblade, to the pastoral bliss of an original ballad like Evangeline or Kenny Garrett's Sing A Song of Song, via the cinematic grandeur of their unique arrangement of Mingus' Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, and the skillful incorporation of world music influences into numbers like Le Zoulou Blanc and Levantine.
